Legendary actor Danny Glover, who has appeared in iconic films including The Color Purple (1985) and Lethal Weapon (1987), revealed to People magazine earlier this year that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2023.
Glover, who turns 80 this month, opened up about his journey living with Alzheimer’s. “I’m still not accepting in my mind all parts of it,” the acting veteran states lucidly, “There are the moments that you keep remembering that validate the fact that you can remember stuff. And there are moments I’ll never forget”.
Alzheimer’s is an irreversible progressive brain disorder that destroys cognitive skills and memory. According to the World Health Organization, over 10 million new Alzheimer’s cases are diagnosed each year. Early signs of Alzheimer’s include forgetting recent events, misplacing things, and getting lost while walking or driving. It is important that individuals who notice these symptoms in themselves, or in a loved one, get evaluated by a medical professional.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, older Black Americans are twice as likely as their White counterparts to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association website states that while the exact cause for this disparity is unknown, factors such as “higher rates of cardiovascular disease”, overall health, and socioeconomic status could play a role in these statistical differences.

Consistent screenings, including memory and cognitive tests, are vital to detecting the disease early. Earlier diagnoses can give those living with the disease more time to develop treatment plans and even participate in clinical trials.
Supporting a loved one who is battling Alzheimer’s disease is not an easy feat. However, there are resources like the Alzheimer’s Association, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, and AARP that provide support and education to both caregivers and individuals living with the disease. Glover’s support system includes his brother Marty, his daughter Mandisa, and a team of caregivers. While Alzheimer’s can be a long and challenging journey, individuals like Glover show us the importance of advocacy and vulnerability.
