At the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios announced that Black Panther’s legacy will continue, with a third film being released in December 2028. The most important part of this announcement is that David Jonsson was cast as King T’Challa’s adult son.
Jonsson is one of the emerging Black stars of Hollywood. He’s starred in films such as “Alien: Romulus”, “The Long Walk” and “Rye Lane”. His breakout role came in the HBO show “Industry”.
He appeared alongside original cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who will reprise their roles in the film. Denzel Washington is also expected to make his debut in the film after revealing that Coogler created a role for him. No other details about the film were announced by Coogler or Marvel.

The upcoming film continues the Black Panther franchise that began with the late Chadwick Boseman in 2018. The first film became a global sensation, hitting the box office with $1.3 billion. It earned 3 Oscars while making history as the first Marvel film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
After Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020, Black Panther’s story continued with Shuri, played by Wright, as the lead in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. This film grossed over $850 million worldwide at the box office and earned 5 Academy Award nominations. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter took home an Oscar for her work in the film.
Coogler will direct the third installment, making it his third MCU film. It will be filmed in 70mm. Black Panther 3 is set to be released on December 15, 2028.
